The tradition of dressing up for Halloween has been around for many hundreds of years, when the Celts celebrated Samhain October 31st, the day they believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Halloween as we know it today was somewhat reinvented in the 19th century, when the concept of costumes and trick or treating really became popular, and it wasn’t just for children either! Halloween isn’t the only celebration for which we dress up either. So what is it about dressing up that we like so much? Costumes free us from our restraints and allow us to be someone or something different and escape ourselves temporarily and it’s FUN, obviously. It’s kind of similar to why people like to play video games, but dressing up is usually a more social affair. So get out the green hair dye, Saint Patrick’s Day is next month!
